When Audible Manager downloads a book to my Sansa Clip players, there's a zero-byte file that goes along with the book segment and it's left on the player when AM deletes the book. But I don't know if they would then download properly. Having these issues with books from 6 years ago makes me want to have a physical backup of my Audible Library on a separate hard drive. I read in the comments that the book had been re-released to deal with a problem with the narration, but apparently my purchase wasn't upgraded. I can access the original book to download to Audible Manager, so I guess it's OK. Turns out there's a version of the book with same narrator but a new publication date.
